Dead batteries are an unpleasant reality of truck ownership, and most drivers have to deal with them on occasion. Fortunately, it’s usually possible to jumpstart a dead battery on your own as long as you have a pair of jumper cables and another driver with a fully-charged, working battery. Here’s our RAM service guide to jump-starting your battery, and how i.g. Burton Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM of Smyrna Service Center can help!
Step-By-Step Guide to Jumpstarting Your RAM Battery
- Park the car with the fully charged battery across from the car with the dead battery so that the hoods are facing each other. Leave a couple of feet between them and then turn off the engines and engage the parking brakes.
- Open both hoods and find the positive (+) terminals on each battery. Connect one red clamp to each positive terminal, starting with the dead battery.
- Connect one of the black clamps to the negative (-) terminal on the working battery.
- Connect the remaining black clamp to any unpainted metallic surface on the vehicle with the dead battery.
- Start the car with the working battery.
- Wait a few minutes and then start the car with the dead battery. If the jump-start works, the engine should turn over. Then you can remove the clamps in the reverse order you connected them. Keep the engine running for about fifteen minutes to restore as much charge as possible.
- If the engine still does not turn over, try again by fully removing the clamps in the reverse order and then reattaching them. If the car still won’t start, have your truck towed to our RAM service center.
